Deloitte Data Breach a Result of Compromised Admin Accounts
by Stacy Blaiss|
The cyberbreach recently disclosed by Deloitte, is just the latest example to underscore the critical importance of securing privileged access. According to Krebs on Security, the breach “involves the compromise of all administrator accounts at the company”, dating back to at least the fall of 2016. While this is unfortunate, it isn’t surprising. These administrator (or privileged) accounts are commonly targeted as they are essentially the ‘keys to the kingdom’ for an attacker to gain access to and move laterally within a network.
According to the 2017 Verizon Data Breach Report released earlier this year, 81% of hacking-related breaches leveraged stolen and/or weak passwords. Not only do people continue to use - and re-use - weak passwords, phishing attacks are becoming increasingly sophisticated as cyber criminals attempt to steal legitimate credentials. Protecting these accounts, and the access to them, should top the priority list for any organization.
Companies simply cannot afford to be complacent in the face of these threats, and should seriously consider employing technology that controls, facilitates and monitors access to privileged systems and data. Risks related to accounts is driving demand for security software such Bomgar Vault, an enterprise grade password management solution. Password vaults improve credential security for privileged users and IT vendors. Not only does secure password storage protect accounts, but features like rotation and randomization eliminate the risk of compromised passwords being valid for long.
For businesses trying to shrink their attack surface by addressing the risk related to privileged credentials, enterprise password managers are a key piece of the solution. Check out this recorded demo of Bomgar Vault for more details.
This month, we’re also hosting a webinar that will feature steps organizations can take to secure access for privileged insiders and vendors – register today to save your spot!
