Why use Jump Client vs Jumpoint?

Jump Technology is Bomgar’s solution for supporting unattended computers and servers. It offers two modes of unattended access: Jumpoints and Jump Clients. This post is intended to clarify the difference between the two.

The Bomgar Jump Client gives your support reps the ability to access unattended Windows, Mac and Linux computers. Jump Clients can be mass deployed, or deployed while you are in a session. Once installed, Jump Clients allow you to access the remote computers wherever they are.

Jump Clients are a good solution for support desks that support mobile users or users on networks outside over which they have little control. A good example is a medical software company that has to support medical offices using its software application. Obviously, the customers are not on the same network as the software company, nor does the software company have much influence over its customers’ networks. Having Jump Clients deployed lets support reps access the remote systems without requiring the person on the other end of the phone to be technical.

Another use case may be the support of traveling sales executives. With Jump Clients, the support desk can help employees on the road, they’re behind a hotel firewall and the VPN is down. Jump Clients make the support process much faster, especially with non-computer literate personnel.
 

Jumpoints, on the other hand, are a good option for accessing networked Windows computers. Unlike the Jump Client, a Jumpoint does not have to be installed on each system. Rather, you install a Jumpoint on a single computer or server within a network. From that Jumpoint, then, you can access all the unattended Windows computers within that network.

Jumpoints are a good solution for supporting remote desktops in a network at a branch office. Since the remote workers are part of the company in this case, the service desk has more influence over the network and can ensure all the systems needing support are tied to the network. Once a Jumpoint has been installed, the service desk can browse through the remote systems and select which one to access.

Unlike Jump Clients, Jumpoints require no client software to be installed on the particular remote desktop. Instead, the Jumpoint pushes a Bomgar session to the networked computer and initiates remote control.

As a side note, the Bomgar Representative Console functions as a Jumpoint, too. In a networked environment, a support rep can push a Bomgar session to a remote Windows system and begin a session, provided they have the proper credentials.
